I am lucky to have a Bicolana mom because Albay is definitely one of the most beautiful places in the country. While I didn't grow up in Bicol, I always get the chance to come here almost every school break or summer. Albay is home to the terrific Mayon volcano which is dubbed as the world's most "perfect cone" because of its almost symmetric conical shape. Albay also takes pride in its delectable local cuisine and their love for spicy foods. Visiting some century old churches is a must do too and don't forget to learn the Bicolano language -It's fun!
Having been to Bicol for quite a few times now, never did I expect that seeing Mayon volcano again will take my breath away. Upon arriving at the Tabaco terminal, I was asked to look behind me - there it was, Mayon in all its glory! I was in awe and simply amazed at its grandeur. It's definitely a place where I always wanted to go whenever I need a breather. I'm glad to be back home.
How To Get There
By Air
Philippine Airlines & Cebu Pacific has a daily flight from Manila to Legazpi. By choosing this mode of transportation, you also get the chance to see the magnificent Mayon Volcano from above.
By Land
Albay is a 10-11 hour trip from Manila. Amihan bus line, Cagsawa Tours, Bicol Isarog Line, Philtranco, DLTB, Alps, Raymond & RSL have multiple daily trips to Legazpi & Tabaco. These bus companies are easily located in Cubao bus terminal (behind shopwise).
*Fare ranges from Php700-1000 (As of August 2017).
Places of Interest
It was a trip to visit our relatives for a get together but I feel the need to take advantage of the opportunity and satisfy my wanderlust. So, I've decided to go on a tour around Legazpi and Daraga.
Visit Cagsawa Ruins Park
I think this is the most famous spot in Albay and the best place to have an unobstruct view of the magnificent Mayon volcano. It is believed that Cagsawa church and hundreds of people inside was buried alive during the 1814 eruption of Mayon volcano. And today, only the bell tower is left. It's a sad event but I personally think that the bell tower tell stories about the town and its people who rose from the tragedy.
Visit Century-old churches
Albay houses some of the most beautiful churches in the country. Our lady of the Gate Parish or known as Daraga church has a commanding view of the majestic Mayon volcano. The church has been declared as a National Culture Treasure of the Philippines in 2007. Daraga church was built to replace the Cagsawa church which was destroyed by the eruption.
St. John the Baptist Church or Tabaco Church is an old but well-preserved church located at the heart of Tabaco City. Its beautiful black facade and huge bell tower is an amazing sight to behold. I was told the it was built using the black volcanic soil from Mayon volcano.
Freshen up at Vera Falls
Vera Falls is an off the beaten track which makes it perfect for a quick dip-fresh with its crystal clear water. Fortunately, we were the only group at the time of our visit so we had all the place to ourselves. Please also note that there is no entrance fee here, you just have to rent a cottage for Php50 or you may also opt to put your belongings on big rocks.
Embarcadero de Legazpi
This is a beautiful seaside with fresh air and a commanding view of the Mayon volcano. Too bad, we arrived a bit late and we’re unable to witness the stunning sunset.
Accommodations
Albay has plenty of budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses. I highly recommend staying in Legazpi City where most of the tourist spots are located.
1. The Oriental Hotel Legazpi
2. Embarcadero Hotel
3. Hotel St. Ellis

Albay is indeed "Magayon" and proved to be worthy of a visit. I couldn't take my eyes off the majestic Mayon volcano and Bicolanos are all friendly too. I am sure to be back and will stay longer to visit other spots and explore it neighboring cities.
